CBD for Menopause

Is CBD A Natural Way To Help Ease The Symptoms Of Menopause?

Menopause is an inevitable part of aging for women. As a woman approaches her mid- to late forties, the natural ebb and flow of her reproductive hormones, such as oestrogen, starts to slow down. But did you know that so too does the production of endocannabinoids?

Endocannabinoids are tightly linked to how reproductive hormones are produced and regulated within women’s bodies. Cannabinoid receptors are not only present in the brain, but female reproductive organs are populated with both CB1 and CB2 receptors (read more about the endocannabinoid system here) where cannabinoids engage directly with estrogen.

Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) is an enzyme that is intimately involved with the regulation of a cannabinoid neurotransmitter called anandamide. Often referred to as the “bliss molecule”, it regulates things like pain, appetite and fertility in the body.

As estrogen production decreases, so too is there a reduction of the FAAH enzyme, in turn, causing a lack of anandamide (read more here). It is this drop off in anandamide levels that’s not only associated with many of the symptoms that present themselves during menopause, but it also has a detrimental impact on the endocannabinoid system.

This is where cannabidiol (CBD) can be an effective, yet natural way, with which to restore hormonal and biological homeostasis within the bodies of menopausal women.

CBD For Menopause: A Natural Way

Generally, menopause and its symptoms are treated with pharmacological interventions such as hormone replacement therapies (HRT’s), estrogen therapies, and even antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s).

Sometimes these treatments are effective, sometimes they are not. But even when they provide some relief, the long-term side effects are often dangerous, including running a higher risk of developing breast cancer, heart disease, thrombosis, and even Alzheimer’s.

CBD is showing potential for being a natural and effective treatment alternative. In addition, CBD is also showing to mitigate some of the health risks associated with menopause.

Hot Flashes

One reason doctors prescribe SSRI’s for menopausal women is because serotonin can help the body to regulate temperature. Cannabinoids such as CBD also boost serotonin, helping to lower body temperature and reduce hot flashes. But unlike SSRI’s, they do so naturally by restoring the body’s homeostasis, and without potentially causing serotonin syndrome.

Bone Density Loss & Osteoporosis

Bone density is intricately linked with estrogen production – as women enter menopause and estrogen levels drop off, so too does their bodies’ ability to build strong bones.

Recent research has shown that cannabinoids such as CBD plays an integral role in bone formation and density by exciting bone growth and preserving peak bone mass while also protecting against age-related bone loss by inhibiting bone resorption.

Mood Swings

As hormone levels change, so too does it change the way in which stress levels and emotions are regulated. Add in the additional endocannabinoid deficiency brought on by a lack of estrogen and it is suddenly not that easy to deal with stress, anger, and feelings of depression or anxiety.

Reintroducing phytocannabinoids such as CBD not only helps restore homeostasis in the brain’s mood centers, but it can also act as an effective antidepressant and anxiolytic.

Summary

Menopause is a reality every woman is going to have to face at some point in their life. Luckily, with a new and expanding body of research showing cannabinoids to be an effective way in dealing with menopausal symptoms, it is something that women do not have to fear or resist anymore.

CBD and other cannabinoids are showing great promise as effective therapeutic agents that can provide much needed and natural relief, without the serious risks and side effects associated with the pharmacological treatments usually prescribed.
