Call it self-care, call it vanity, call it what ever you want.  But we as women want to feel beautiful, look beautiful and be beautiful.  And a big part of this is our skin.  Unfortunately, most of us are not blessed with flawless, baby smooth skin and the struggle against things like acne, wrinkles and skin sensitivities are a real one.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is known for its relaxing, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antioxidant properties when ingested.  But recent research is also showing that these therapeutic properties of CBD is just as helpful when applied directly to the skin.

These recent findings may be why you are seeing CBD in skin care everywhere – from smaller boutique CBD skin care companies, to large skin care brands to popular retailers. And with fashionable women’s magazines, influencers and beauty bloggers touting the benefits of CBD for skin care, there is no doubt that this cannabinoid has reached an all-time high in the beauty and wellness scene.

We’ve all seen beauty trends come and go – who doesn’t remember the hype around coconut oil and green tea?  Let’s take a look at what makes CBD different, why it works and why beauty experts predict that it’s most likely just the beginning for CBD in skin care.

WHAT DOES CBD FOR SKIN

As with many other different types of skin care ingredients, there are a lot of claims being made about how amazing CBD is for skin.  But is it true?  Let’s take a look.

The skin is our bodies largest organ and acts a like a barrier against unwanted organisms, toxins and other types of environmental factors.  And because of this, our skin also has the highest amount of cannabinoid receptors which form part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).  The ECS functions as a kind of checks-and-balances system, regulating various vital physiological functions and processes such as inflammation, pain and immunity, but also how much or little oil our skin produces.

The reason why CBD works so well for our skin is because it has the ability to regulate and interact with the endocannabinoid receptors in our skin.  In short, the therapeutic and medicinal effects of CBD on the skin is caused by its ability to stimulate and affect our skin’s cannabinoid receptors which helps our skins to better regulate things like:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Lipid production which can lead to acne
  • Defend against environmental factors such as bacteria and pollution
  • The release of histamines
  • Skin cell proliferation which causes psoriasis

HOW CBD CAN HELP WITH SKIN PROBLEMS

CBD for Skin: Acne

Acne is probably one of the most wide-spread skin issues women have to deal with.  Especially for women who have hormonal imbalances, suffer from PMS or have other types of health issues which cause acne, it is also the most persistent and annoying.

Although acne have many underlying causes, their formation is mainly caused by an increased secretion of skin oils called sebum coupled with a bacterial infection by the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria.  This can cause large, red, swollen bumps on the skin which are often inflamed and painful.

There are numerous studies that have shown that CBD has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.  Cystic acne and red acne which are caused by inflammation and infection in the skin is especially responsive to CBD.

Another way in which CBD works for acne is to work preventatively by reducing the production of skin lipids.  Clinical studies are showing that CBD helps to reduce the formation of sebum in the sebaceous glands, which helps to reduce the formation of acne.

CBD for Skin: Anti-aging

One major cause of aging is due to free-radical damage.  Free radicals are atoms which are missing an electron and created from pollution such as smog, dust and cigarette smoke, as well the sun.  Free radicals try to “fix” themselves by trying to grab an extra electron from atoms in the skin.  When this happens, it causes damage to the skin’s DNA which accelerate skin aging.

The best defence against free radicals are antioxidants which research indicates can help lessen the visible signs of aging skin.  And as it turns out that CBD also has antioxidant properties.  That is why CBD infused anti-aging creams may be able to visibly reduce fine lines, wrinkles, skin dullness and redness, making us and our skins look younger.

CBD for Sensitive Skin & Dermatitis

Another benefit of CBD is its significant soothing, calming and normalizing effects it has on the skin.  This can help minimize and reduce issues like redness and irritation that those with sensitive skin have to deal with.

Sensitive skins are also more prone to develop dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition which is often triggered by contact with an irritant, causing red, itchy or burning rashes.  Because of CBD’s aforementioned anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can help to reduce the symptoms of dermatitis.

CBD for Skin: Eczema & Psoriasis

Eczema and psoriasis are chronic autoimmune diseases characterized by patches of dry flaky skin which is usually silvery or red in color and which can be itchy or painful.  It is caused by an excess in skin cell production and division and to date, there is no cure for it.

Eczema and psoriasis treatments usually involve a combination of things such as changes in diet, sun exposure and medicinal creams to alleviate symptoms.  But recently, CBD is also becoming a popular way of treating flare-ups and relieving the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.  Studies show that CBD has the ability to slow down skin cell division, tackling the root cause of eczema and psoriasis.

WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR IN CBD SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

If you are suffering from any of these skin conditions, it might be worth your while to give CBD skin care products a go.  But before you rush out and spend your hard-earned dollars, it is important to understand that not all products are created equally.

Price

Price is often a marker of quality.  Organic, pure and legal hemp plants take time and resources to grow, just like it takes money and effort to create, process and certify high-quality, potent and pure CBD extracts.  So if you are finding a product which claims to have a high amount of CBD for very little money, the chances are that the CBD is sub-par, inorganic and not produced in the United States.

Purity

When it comes to CBD for skin, the purer the CBD the better.  Try to find a product that contains CBD which is 95% pure and refined multiple times to remove other compounds present in the hemp plant which does not have the same therapeutic skin care properties as CBD.

Third-party Testing

The price seems right and the product claims to be pure with high concentrations of CBD.  But don’t take the company’s word for it.  Check out their website to see if they have lab tests available – something which is becoming an industry standard.  If not, reach out to them and request a copy.  If they can’t provide you with independent lab result to show the quality and purity of the CBD used in their products, it might be a good idea to find an alternative.
